Camping Sursee is just a couple of miles from A2 motorway, south of Basel in Switzerland. The site is close to the “Sempachersee” – known also as Lake Sempach. We had not made a reservation as we were not actually sure where we would be spending the night. Generally speaking, when en route to Italy, we overnight in the Strasbourg or Mulhouse area in France, but due to running early, we decided to push on a little further and cross the Swiss border – this meant for a very short “day 3” of our journey the next day.

When arriving anywhere with a motorhome the size of the Swift Kontiki, the first thing to do is to “case the joint!”. As we turned into the driveway, I spotted a large car park area that would suffice as a last resort if there no free pitches or indeed no pitches large enough to accommodate us. The site staff were friendly and welcoming in a mixture of English and Italian. The price was thirty Swiss Francs for the pitch including electric hook up. This is not the cheapest, but for a one night halt, hardly likely to break the bank either.

The receptionist took us to our pitch and asked which side our habitation door was on. I thought this was a very nice touch as it avoids the “door to door” situation. We were camping amongst motorhomes and caravans of all nationalities – except British. Access to both the site and to the pitches was easy, even in a motorhome just shy of nine metres in length.

On site facilities at Camping Sursee.

  • Grass pitches with or without electric hook up (some hook up posts required the three pin “Swiss adaptor”)
  • 10 amps electric where provided
  • WiFi
  • Toilet/shower block – but note – half a Swiss Franc for a three-minute shower!
  • Washing machine/dryer
  • Chemical disposal point

Noteworthy of a mention, our reverse polarity indicator came on.

Camping Sursee – silent night!

The one thing we did note at night-time was pretty much total silence and very little light pollution. As a result, it’s a good idea to take a torch as the site is not very well-lit!

Camping Sursee makes an excellent overnight stopover for those heading to and from Italy. However, with the Lake close by, a town centre with shops and a rail station, then a longer stay may also be the order of the day.

More details of the site on the net.
