THREE mobile in Italy – avoids roaming charges

At the end of August, THREE mobile announced details of their “Feel at Home” tariff. This means that when using THREE mobile in Italy there are no roaming charges. The user’s standard UK tariff applied. In addition to Italy, the “Feel at Home” service also applies in Austria, Ireland, Sweden, Hong Kong, Australia and Denmark. At first glance, this may look like an unusual selection of countries, but these are the ones where THREE has a presence in the mobile phone and internet market.

We were in Italy in September, so the “Feel at Home” service came at a great time for us to try using THREE mobile in Italy.

The mobile ‘phone worked a treat and we had numerous inbound and outbound phone calls to the UK. As these were within our UK-based contract, we were not charged anything for using  THREE mobile in Italy!

Now on to the internet. We had a THREE dongle which when connected to the laptop worked OK albeit rather slowly. Upon disconnecting the dongle, the THREE sim card was inserted into our new MiFi device – we had upgraded from a standard dongle to the THREE MiFi just prior to the Italian trip. The MiFi powered delivered a WiFi connection to an I Phone, I Pad and a laptop although speeds on the laptop were rather slow. This internet connection was all provided without further charge than our UK tariff.

All in all though, THREE mobile in Italy is a great deal and of course don’t forget the other countries!

THREE mobile in Italy – and other countries

The number of countries being add to the THREE at home scheme may vary. You can check here for the latest information.

Update: Since writing this article, many more countries have been added to the Feel at Home service. Additions include France, Switzerland and Spain. This is terrific news for motorhomers and caravanners heading for Europe.
