Livigno enjoys tax free status and hence prices in Livigno are lower than in many places in Europe. This tax-free status has been the case for many years. Livigno is a pretty town although access via mountain passes and from the south and west may be tricky at certain times of the year. Access from the north is via the Tunnel la Schera.
Examples of prices in Livigno, September 2015
Diesel – 0.85 euro per litre (about 63 pence per litre!)
Smirnoff Vodka – 5.40 euro per litre (about £4)
Grants Whisky – 6.00 euro per litre (about £4.50)
Cigarettes such as Rothmans – 37 euro for 200.
Many shops were selling cameras, watches, lap tops, app – style mobiles etc. Be careful though, as some prices, such as a selection of aftershave that I inspected were more expensive than in the UK!
It must be noted however that accessing Livigno via the Munt la Schere Tunnel cost us 24 Swiss Francs in respect of toll fees. However, our savings on our low-cost diesel outweighed the expense of the toll. The tunnel operates one direction of traffic flow at a time and so you must be prepared to wait. On busy days, the traffic flow is controlled by a timetable.
Details of the tunnel, up to date tariff and maximum vehicle sizes etc can be found here.
