LPG in Italy is, at present, difficult but not impossible to obtain. Back in 2007, the law was changed to one whereby LPG – known as GPL – in Italy had to be dispensed by staff at the outlet rather than the DIY self service approach that is common across Europe. Wind the clock forward for several years – to 2014 in fact and a new law was passed stating that LPG could be dispensed by the user rather than service station staff. However, despite there being around 4000 lpg stations in Italy, (this compares to around 1800 in the UK), self service filling is still difficult. The principal reason for this relates to the new rules placed on forecourts. These rules include:
- An emergency cut off point
- 24/7 telephone helpline
- The requirement for the user to register and use an app
This website is in Italian but Google will translate it for you and you can read the full explanation.
We have however filled up several times in Italy without issue – today included. We carry a Safefill cylinder and explain to the attendant about the “80% cut off point”.
