I don’t know how it happens, why it happens but it always seems to happen to me! In fact, this time I turned into Victor Meldrew and said “I don’t believe it!”. The rear most tyre on the offside of the Kontiki looked rather, well, deflated to say the least. I checked the pressure on all six tyres and none of them were where I like it. Five out of the six were at just 60 psi and the rear most one was just 20 psi! I observed all this after my first journey in the motorhome. However, the tyre at just 20 psi did not appear visually flat, it just felt rather soft. All six tyres were inflated to 80 psi but days later, the rear most felt a little soft.
I searched online for a tyre dealer in the Wakefield and Dewsbury area and the usual names popped up. However, one that I had not heard of, Gordons Tyres Wakefield, also appeared on the search. A glance at their website suggested that Gordons Tyres Wakefield looked easy to access with a large vehicle. I made a quick call and the receptionist confirmed they had plenty of space for a large motorhome, although it probably would not fit inside the building.
I took the motorhome along to Gordons Tyres at Wakefield this morning, booked in and had a wait of about 15 minutes before the ‘van was looked at. The place was quite busy and I noted that some customers, both private and corporate, appeared to be regulars who have had servicing and so on done in the past. Anyway, I took the Kon-tiki round the back and returned to the comfortable waiting area. A short while later, the technician re-appeared and it was “all done”. The cost of the repair was £16 and it seems that two screws were lodged in the tyre. I enquired how this was repaired and the receptionist stated it was “a mushroom-shaped” plug, but then I got lost in the technicality.
The last time I had a tyre issue, I almost passed out at the shock of the cost. Today, I really felt that £16 was a good honest price for a repair to a tyre.
Gordons Tyres Wakefield – location
Gordons Tyres is located just off junction 40 of the M1 motorway. There is ample parking for a motorhome/caravan/RV etc and whilst it is somewhere I hope not to re-visit, I shall keep a note of their number “just in case”. Website details here.
Russell, although it’s an American video, the methods of tyre repair are the same, and explains the “plugging” process very well.
Enjoy,
Jock.
Lucky you Just had a nail in my Kontiki repaired at ATS charged £26
Well I try to avoid the national names…. That said, Gordons is part of a large chain, albeit mostly covering Scotland.
