Severn Bridge Crossing

Being the first foray into South Wales with a motorhome, I had a look at the map for the best route from the North towards Newport, Gwent. Online maps suggested the M5 and M4, but attention was drawn to the Severn Bridge Crossing – and more importantly the cost associated with it! Now not being one to splash the cash without good cause, avoiding this toll was on the agenda. A play with Google maps and altering the route to “via Ross on Wye” suggested the M50 motorway and then the dual carriageways, meeting up with the M4 just east of Newport.

The tariff for the Severn Bridge Toll for a motorhome is £6.20 and I understand the tariff only applies to Westbound traffic – ie coming from London/Bristol and into Wales. The Severn Bridge Crossing is free for the east bound journey, so the toll is payable only on entering Wales.

The information below is a “copy and paste” extract from an email that I sent to the Severn Bridge Crossing authority.

Good Afternoon Russell

Thank you for your email.

Our procedures state the following;

Vehicles with Permanent Live-In Accommodation

A vehicle can be considered as “Motor Caravan” and classified as Class 1, only if:

The primary use of the vehicle is to provide mobile living accommodation,

The vehicle must have a cooker AND a sink AND sleeping accommodation PERMANENTLY installed inside.

If the Toll Collector is unsure of the vehicle classification, or unable to see the permanently installed living accommodation they are to summon the Chief Collector to inspect inside the vehicle and determine the vehicle classification.

Therefore, providing that you vehicle is permanently fitted with the three above requirements, we can confirm that it will be classified as a Class 1 category with a current toll due of £6.20.

We can also confirm that the toll is only payable in the Westbound direction, therefore, no toll is charged when travelling Eastbound.

We trust this information has answered your query.

Regards

So, with a mileage differential of virtually nothing, and not much difference in time, that’s another toll free route to add to the pot!

The present tariffs can be found on the bridge website
